CAMBOBABS

1. Plus qu' une seule école!!! Les enfants des rizières sont venus rejoindre ceux de CBK, chez Kakada. Trop d'enfants étaient en attente pour la classe ABC, en plus il fallait absolument que ceux de la rizière côtoient d'autres enfants. Pari réussi, ils se parlent (il a fallu une semaine...), jouent et étudient ensemble. Depuis la CBR a fait d'énormes progrès.
Une deuxième classe a vu le jour ( ABC+) avec les aînés de la rizière, ils ont appris à lire et à écrire  (phonics learn to read) en 3 semaines et ....!!! font 1 heure par jour de pc pour se familiariser avec le clavier (système Mario). Quelle joie pour eux, pour leurs parents, pour Kakada et moi même!!!!

1. As of now there is only one school!!! The kids of the ricefield joined the ones at CBK at Kakada’s. Too many kids there were awaiting an ABC class and it’s also important that kids from the ricefield get to know other children from a different environment. Now that both schools merged, the kids from the ricefield are together with those who were at CBK before and they slowly get to know each other (it took about a week).  Now they all play, have fun, and study together.  Since the merge, CBK is progressing enormously. 

A second class has seen the light (ABC+) with the oldest kids from the ricefield; they learned to read and write (with hooked on phonics “learn to read”) within 3 weeks!!! They also do 1h of computer class per day so that they can be familiar with the keyboard (Mario Bros software).
What a joy for them, their parents, for Kakada and myself!!!

1. Iedereen in 1 school !!!! De kids van de rijstvelden komen met de fiets of te voet in groep naar de CBK school bij Kakada. In het begin, een beetje moeilijk, de rijstvelden hebben nooit contact met andere dorpen... Nu is alles perfekt, ze spelen, lachen samen en zitten gemengd in de klas!!! En studeren ook beter ! Een tweede klas is ook nieuw, ABC+, met de oudsten van de CBR, they did it!! In 3 weken hebben ze leren lezen en schrijven (via phonics learn to read) en zitten 1 uur per dag op computer en leren de keyboard (mario).

De ouders, Kakada en mezelf zijn zo zo fier!!

2. Clean the "Kampot river" (journée internationale des rivières) Une action menée par notre lady "paddelboard" et tous les expats de Kampot.10 de nos élèves ont eu congé de la state school afin de participer à cette  merveilleuse action.
Jamais ils n'étaient venus à Kampot, ni tuk-tuk, ni voguer sur un bateau, ce fut merveilleux, ils se sont impliqués à fond et en parlent toujours.

10 of our students got a day off from the state school to attend this wonderful action.

They had never been in Kampot, on a tuktuk, never got onto a boat; it was amazing. They invested themselves a lot and still talk about it.

Clean the "Kampot River" (internationale rivierendag) is een evenement dat wordt georganiseerd door onze paddleboard lady en de expats van Kampot.10 van onze studenten kregen een dag vrij van de overheidsschool om dit geweldige evenement te realiseren. Ze hadden nog nooit in een tuktuk gereden, in een boot gevaren en waren nog nooit in Kampot geweest. Het was geweldig. Ze hebben zichzelf enorm ontwikkeld en praten er nog steeds over.

4. Les élèves ont voté "Rose" pour le nouveau t-shirt d'uniforme!!!!! Hihi. Après la "Khmer new year", j'irai les chercher avec Anique à PP. Et oui, elle revient!!!!! Sa thèse finie et acceptée, elle veut absolument revoir les enfants, et... Un peu moi... Elle redonnera cours dès la fin des vacances scolaires Khmers.

Yes… she is coming back!!! Her thesis is finished and approved; she absolutely wants to see the kids again and see me a little bit also …  She will teach the kids as soon as the Khmer school holidays are over.

5. Merci à Daphnée (Française) pour son super boulot pour Cambobabs sur le terrain, elle avait une imagination incroyable pour les jeux et l'animation. Merci aussi pour son soutien du démênagement des êcoles, je stressais pas mal..... Elle était là!

Merci à Sheina (USA) pour ces cours magnifiques, l'utilisation de son i-pad pour les cours et jeux, nous avons pu capté leur attention grâce à toutes ces nouvelles idêes. Cela a facilité le démarrage des deux nouvelles classes. Belle continuation de ton voyage de noce, Sheina!!!!

5. Thanks to Daphnée ( a French citizen) for her amazing job on site at Cambobabs.  She had an incredible imagination for the games and the animations.  Also big thanks for her support of the merge of the schools; I stressed a big deal…. but she was there.

Thanks to Sheina (USA) for those wonderful courses, the use of her i-pad for the classes and the games. We were able to acquire their attention to all those new ideas, it made it easier to start the two new classes.  Have a wonderful honeymoon follow up Sheina!!!!!!

6. Je ne vous parle pas assez souvent de Kakada. C'est un jeune homme de 21 ans, absolument merveilleux, qui effectue un boulot énorme.

Il va aux cours d'anglais chez Eugène, un ami anglais, à 7h, à 8h15 il va aux cours de photoshop. Ensuite il vient me voir, on fait le point des cours, des élèves, les achats, les visites au 'chief of commune' ou autres, visites des familles à problèmes.... Des élèves passent spontanément à l'école pour demander de l'aide pour leurs cours, des cours de pc pour ceux qui ne peuvent venir l'après midi  et enfin!!! Nos cours commencent à 15h jusque 20h45. Lorsqu'il a un petit moment de libre, il passe à son centre de jeunesse, pour organiser d'autres aides. Le weekend il va à l'université. Voilà la vie de mon merveilleux prof Kakada!!!!

Merci à lui d'être là, à fond pour Cambobabs et de porter Cambobabs à bout de bras lorsque je suis en Belgique. Je suis si fière de lui!!!!!

6. I do not talk to you enough about Kakada.  He is a young man of 21 years old, absolutely amazing who does enormous amounts of work for Cambobabs.

He is going to an English course at Eugene, an English friend, from 7AM to 8:15AM.  After his English class he goes to his Photoshop class, after that he comes to see me where we outline our courses for Cambobabs, we discuss about the students, do purchases, visit the chief of commune, visit troubled families….  

Students come by the school spontaneously to ask help and assistance for their courses, computer classes for those who cannot attend in the afternoons….!!!  Our classes kick off at 15h00 until 20h45.  

When Kakada has some free time, he goes to his youth center to organize other activities which involve helping out communities.  On weekends he attends university.

That’s the life of my wonderful professor Kakada!!!!

I am thankful for him being so involved and active with Cambobabs and for being my right arm when I am in Belgium.  I am proud of him!!!!

6. Ik spreek nooit over Kakada. Een fijne jongeman, 21 jaar oud, die zich echt inzet voor Cambobabs, de engelse lessen, de computer school en nog zoveel meer....

Hij begint s'morgens om 7 met een engelse cursus bij Eugene, een britse vriend, om 8 volgt hij fotoshop en dank komt hij langs bij me! We bespreken de lessen, de projekten, gaan met sommige naar het ziekenhuis, bezoekje bij de chief of commune, bij de llingen die problemen hebben wat huis of voedsel betreft...

De lessen beginnen om 15 uur en eindigen om 20.45.

In het weekend gaat hij naar de universiteit en als hij wat vrije tijd heeft, houdt hij zich bezig met de jeugdbeweging! Hij is een schitterend ventje, waar ik echt fier op ben ! En neemt alles in handen wanneer ik in België ben!

In naam van Cambobabs en de kids danken we hem hartelijk!

2. Un autre grand bonheur, l'arrivée d'Antoni pour la première fois au Cambodge.

Son sourire et sa bonne humeur sont un rayon de soleil pour les enfants.

Il s'accapare la classe des âinés (conversation class) et nous assiste aux autres cours.

2. Dolgelukkig ben ik met de aankomst (eerste keer in Cambodia) van Antoni. In zijn koffer : 4 laptops!!! voor CBK, een nieuw amerikaans programma voor de ABC, verrassingen voor klein en groot en nog veel meer.... Hij straalt!!! geeft samen met ons les en neemt de klas 18/20 jaar volledig over.

2. Another happy moment, the arrival of Antoni for the first time in Cambodia.

In his carry-on there were 4 laptops!!! for CBK, a hooked-on-phonics box which is a program and method to teach kids the ABC and to read and write, 

surprises and gifts for small and big, additionally his smile and good humor made the kids very happy.

He assists us in teaching the English classes and takes over completely the older class with the 18 to 20 year old students.

3. Le dimanche, ensemble avec Rachel et Antoni, nous avons fait une petite excursion vers le 'secret lake' et les montagnes, là où la plupart de nos élèves habitent. Nos étudiants font parfois 2hrs de vélo pour venir à nos écoles...

6. Antoni adore "sa" classe de conversation!!! on y parle du monde, de religion, de politique, de géographie (au Cambodge il n'y a pas de cours de géo;  ni d'histoire du monde, uniquement l'histoire de leur guerre civile....) ils découvrent avec amusement.

6. Antoni LOVES “his” conversation class!!!! We talk about the world, religion, politics, geography… (in Cambodia there are no geography, history, or world orientation courses; only the history of their civil war…)  They discover while having fun.

7. Malheureusement on perd une petite dame, après l'avoir fait soigner à l'hopital. Elle me disait 2 jrs auparavant, qu'elle se sentait si bien et nous remerciait pour les soins. Nous sommes allés aux obsèques.

7. Unfortunately we lost a little lady.  After having taken her to the hospital she told me that she was feeling good and thanked us for the care…but her life ended.  We went to the funeral service.

8. Tous les enfants de l'école de la rizière, exceptés 4 (qui n'ont plus accès) vont tous à l'école de l'état de Khmer. Nous avons été tour à tour, acheter les uniformes avec eux. 2 blouses ou chemises chacun et une jupe ou pantalon. Pour certains des chaussures. A chacun aussi les cahiers et livres demandés par l'école.

8. Al de kids van de rijstvelden gaan nu naar de staatsschool, behalve 4 die geen toegang meer hebben. Hop, naar de markt uniformen kopen, boeken en schriften. Elk 2 hemdjes en één rok of één broek.

8. All the children from the rice field school, with the exception of 4 who have no access anymore, are all going to the Khmer state school.

We went one by one to buy a uniform (which entails 2 blouses or shirts and each kid a skirt or pants), for some we also purchased the shoes.
  For each kid we provided also the required books and materials.

9. Antoni a offert une ballade en bateau sur la Kampot river à "ses"élèves.

La plupart n'avaient jamais vu Kampot (à 30 min de leur village), ni la rivière et aucun n'avait été sur un bateau... Annie, notre 'paddelboard lady' nous attendait avec trois planches et rames à une heure d'ici.
Frank nous a fait un mini prix pour le bateau et le pique nique. Qqs amis nous on rejoint sur le bateau et ensemble, nous avons nager, paddelboarder, chanter, danser, jouer de la guitare et manger! Une journée inoubliable pour tous qui s'est terminé par un magnifique coucher de soleil.

9. Antoni heeft "zijn" llingen getracteerd op een boattrip op de Kampot river. De meesten waren nooit in Kampot, nooit de rivier gezien en nog minder op een boot gezeten (Kampot ligt op een half uur van hun dorp)... Annie onze,paddelboard lady, wachtte ons op met 3 planken op een uurtje van hier. Een paar vrienden waren van de party en Frank heeft ons een mini bedrag gevraagd voor de boot en de picnic. We hebben gepaddeld, gezwommen, gezongen, gedanst, gitaar gespeeld, lekker gesnoept...! Een fantastische dag !!!!!

9. Antoni treated “his” students on a boat trip on the Kampot River.Most of them never saw Kampot (which is 30min of their village), never saw the river, and none of them was ever on a boat…   Annie, our paddle board lady was waiting for us further on the river with 3 boards and paddles.  Frank made us a good deal on the price for the boats and the picnic.

A couple of friends joined us on the boat, we swam, did some paddle board, we sang, danced, played guitar, and we ate!!!!

An unforgettable day for everyone; the day ended with a magnificent sunset.

11. Un de nos aînés, nous a tous invité à visiter la ferme de ses parents. Les étudiants libres ce jour là ont emprunté des motos à leur entourage et nous voilà parti à une heure de CBK (là où la plupart de nos élèves habitent). Une ferme d'arbres fruitiers... durians, mangues, papayes, bananes à perte de vue!!! La durian adorée par les Cambodgiens (nous, un peu moins... ) a eu un succès fou! La famille nous ont tous invité au "hope baai", le repas, qui était délicieux. On a terminé la journée par une baignade au secret lake.

11. Eén van onze oudsten, heeft ons uitgenodigd bij zijn ouders! De studenten die vrij waren, hebben brommers uitgeleend. Een uur rijden (meeste van onze kids komen van die omgeving  naar onze school, 2 u met de fiets...). Fruit, fruit overal, durians, bananen, mangos, papayas..., ongelooflijk! De durian is het lievelingsfruit van de Cambodjaan, er werd gesmuld!! De ouders hebben ons uitgenodigd op "hope baai", de maaltijd, schitterend! We eindigen de dag in de secret lake.

11. One of our more advanced students invited us to his parents’ farm. The students who were free that day borrowed bikes and we took off on a trip one hour away from CBK (which is also the area where most of the students come from and live).  The farm had an abundance of fruit trees… durians, mangos, papaya, bananas… it was never ending.  The durian fruit is really loved by Cambodians (we don’t love it quite like them…)

and had lots of success among our students.
  The family invited everyone for “hope baai” or lunch; it was delicious.  We ended the trip with a little swim at secret lake.

14. Antoni avait un tas de petits cadeaux dans ses bagages. On a glissé plein de surprises dans le nouveau cartable en plastic, ainsi que les résultats des examens. Jamais ils n'ont eu de jouets... 14. Antoni had een hoop speelgoed in zijn koffer! In de nieuwe plastic boekentas, hebben we de resultaten van hun examen en de verrassingnen verborgen... Nog nooit hebben de kids speelgoed gehad. Top! St Niklaas... Kijk zelf... Naar de filmpjes en de fotootjes....

14. Antoni had tons of little gifts in his baggage.  We packed many surprises in new plastic schoolbags together with the results of the quizzes.  The children never had toys before… It was too cute, just like Santa Claus!!!!  Look at the pictures and the mini movies…. Thanks to those who donate those toys!!

15. Dernier soir d'Antoni.
Le retour pénible, sous une pluie battante, sur nos motos, l 'eau jusqu'au dessus de nos roues... Ai eu très peur... Mais nous sommes arrivés sain et sauf!!!!

15. Laatste avond van Antoni. 
Daarna zijn we in de gietende regen naar huis vertrokken met onze brommers... Water tot boven het wiel.... Waw.... Was wel fier niet te vallen... Maar we zagen er maar zieltjes bij... Vooral ik!!!

15. Last evening of Antoni.  After this we drove home on our motorbikes in pouring rain… water was reaching levels higher than our wheels… wooow… was proud that I didn’t fall this time… but we looked pretty bad upon arrival… me above all!!!!

Zoals elk jaar is Rachel terug in Cambodia. 

Samen zijn we Lina gaan groeten en stonden versteld naar haar dak te kijken.

Ik ga wekelijks, op 1 week tijd was er haast geen dak meer !! 

Op 1 uur tijd hebben we een team vrijwilligers samengesteld en s'anderendaags had ze een nieuw dak en herstelde muren. 

Fantastisch! en dank aan dit fantastisch stelletje vrijwilligers!

Comme chaque année, Rachel est revenue au Cambodge. 

Ensemble nous avons été saluer notre Lina.

Nous étions choquées de voir l'état de son toît inexistant. 

J'y vais toutes les semaines, les pluies abondantes des derniers jours avaient tout détruit.

En 1 heure, 1 équipe de volontaires est constituée et le lendemain soir, Lina avait un nveau toît et les murs rénovés.

Formidable!

Rachel is back in Cambodia.

Together, we went to see Lina and were very surprised to see "almost no roof on the house".

I go weekly but the heavy rains and winds destroyed the house in a few days.

In 1 hour we had a volunteer team and next day, Lina had a new roof and new upper walls. Great!

Thanks to the fantastic team! 

We beginnen het nieuwe jaar alweer met goed nieuws. Alles verloopt hier vlot, de studenten van de twee scholen gaan er echt voor! Samen met Kakada, hebben we dinsdag afspraak op het Ministerie van Onderwijs, om  elk jaar, een certificaat te bekomen voor de llingen van de CBK school. De "chief of commune" staat achter ons en zal ons dossier ook voorleggen.
Kakada is niet alleen gemotiveerd als prof, hij werkt ook mee in al onze projekten.
 
De vrijwilligers stromen binnen. Fransen, Israeliërs, Schotten, Canadezen, Polen en een hele bende Australiërs hebben samen een huis gerestaureerd en ook les gegeven, spelen georganiseerd en de kids gewassen..
We hebben ingezien dat de spelen heel belangrijk zijn voor de kids van de rijstvelden. Ze kunnen zich heel moeilijk concentreren en met de spelen, gaat dit al heel wat beter in de klas. De Kakadaschool (CBK) werd door de dorpelingen vergroot, 4 lessenaars erbij en 3 grote waterputten werden achter de klas gebouwd.
 
Een fijne ontmoeting met Anny, een Amerikaanse. Zij verplaatst zich praktisch uitsluitend met een paddle board. Is namelijk de hele Mekong afgevaren en hier gaat ze in Kampot shoppen met haar paddle board via de rivier of de zee, haar handtas en schoenen vooraan op de plank en in een kleurrijk jurkje.... echt gek om te zien!
Na een uurtje samen praten, is alles pikobello in orde : zij gaat de kids leren paddelen op Rabbit Island; minibus (waar we op elkaar zaten..) besteld, de boten gereserveerd, life jackets gekocht... en vrijdag zijn we dus vertrokken. Eerste afspraak in Kep : Anny en Peter (een Canadese vriend), in het midden van de zee, stormen met hun paddleboard naar ons toe en groeten ons : Anny gaat op haar hoofd staan op haar plank!!! hihi. De kids kijken met open mond en groot gegigel! en weg met de schrik van de zee, ze rennen de bus in om snel naar Rabbit verder te trekken.
Geen sprake van les geven. Wanneer Anny en Peter bij het strand komen, lopen de kids de zee in en springen op de planken en beginnen te paddelen!!!  (had hun zwemles gegeven op school, al zittend, 1, 2 3 met de armen...). Allen konden zwemmen, de life jackets bleven op het strand! Een fantastische schoolreis!!!
We doen dit zeker ook met 2 van de 3 klassen van CBK; Anny komt eind januari met een film over het milieu, en stilaan gaan we enkele begrippen aanleren!
 
Samen met Joane, een Australische arts en vriendin, zien we een mogelijkheid om tetanos inenting gratis te krijgen voor alle llingen. Dit jaar gaan we veel te dikwijls naar het ziekenhuis met onze kids. We hebben net het leven gered van ons doofstommetje die op 1 dag na... daar zij al septicemia .. heb ze deze morgen nog gezien in het ziekenhuis, alles gaat stilaan beter, we zorgen dagelijks voor haar.
 
Hier in Kampot, een groot verschil met 2008! Nu veel toerisme, meer verkeer, meer leven! Wat een verschil met de dorpen waar bijna niets veranderd... ben blij de 2 uitersten mee te leven!!
 
Na een paar frissere weken, wordt het weer lekker warm (35 36°), maar heel veel wind! (lokale mistral). De moestuinen zijn volop in bloei, er zijn er heel wat!!  Bijna geen water meer in de putten, we zoeken om te pompen.
 
We hebben tientallen foto's, die zullen deze week door Chato (die weer thuis is) op de blog gezet worden, hier is de internet nog te traag. Dus nog enkele dagen geduld.
 
Wat de tuk-tuk betreft : we hebben de prijzen en de info. Maar het organiseren neemt tijd, waar zetten we het s'nachts, wie gaat rijden, hoe, waar?...  We hebben tot nu toe geen tijd gehad, werken veel en komen laat thuis. ik hou jullie op de hoogte!

L'année 2012 commence par de bonnes nouvelles, les voici :

Tout se passe super bien! Les étudiants des 2 écoles font tout pour être au top. Nous allons essayer d'avoir un certificat via le Ministère de l'Education pour lés élèves à chaque fin de cycle. On y travaille avec le “ chief of commune “, à qui j'ai donné un dossier complet à propos de Cambobabs. (rdv mardi au Ministère).

Kakada est toujours aussi merveilleux. Non seulement, il enseigne bien mais nous aide dans tous les projets.

Les volontaires viennent de partout, France, Israel, Ecosse, Canada, Pologne et beaucoup d'Australiens,....., ils adorent nos projets et ont tous participé à la réparation complète d'une maison et certains aux cours d'anglais, aux jeux et aux douches...

On se rend compte que les jeux au village sont importants, ils n'arrivent pas trop à se concentrer, et tous les exercices les aident beaucoup.. L'école de Kakada (CBK) a été agrandie et les enfants ont plus d'espace, des bancs sups et des puits d'eau ont été placés.

Rencontre avec une américaine superbe, Anny. Elle ne bouge qu'avec son paddle board!! Elle a fait tout le Mékong comme ça et bien plus encore. Même pour faire ses courses ici à Kampot, elle se balade sur la rivière et la mer avec sa planche, chaussures et sac à main sur le devant de sa planche et en petite robette. A la première rencontre, je lui ai demandé d'apprendre le paddling aux enfants des rizières, une heure plus tard, tout était réglé, le mini bus jusque Kep, les bateaux pour Rabbit Island etc... 

Vendredi nous sommes donc partis. Voyant arriver Anny et Peter, un ami Canadien, sur leurs planches en pleine mer vers nous, les enfants ont oublié leur peur de la mer. Et pour l'arrivée et dire bonjour aux enfants, elle se met sur la tête!!! hihi... sur sa planche.

A la plage, les enfants ont sauté sur les planches, pas de cours à donner, ils ont pris les rames, se sont mis debout et sont partis à plusieurs en mer (ne sachant pas nager, j'ai eu très peur pour eux, et non, tout roulait) Pas besoin d'utiliser nos gilets de sauvetage car : à l'école je leur avais enseigné la brasse des bras (tout cela assis, un peu serrés et tout..., ) c'était très drôle et voila que tous nagent !!!! ils sont à l'aise et ont passé toute la journée en mer!

Anny veut lancer une location de paddle board et nous offrir les sous de la location!!!

Elle vient fin janvier montrer un film pour enfant sur l'environnement et expliquer les choses petit à petit, afin d'assainir un peu...  On remet Rabbit probablement avec 2 des classes de CBK.

A Kampot, quelle différence avec l'année de mon arrivée en 2008.. grand changement; cela évolue vite ici, de plus en plus de touristes passent et restent un bon moment, les guesthouses (et il y en a plein!) sont pleines, de plus en plus de trafic et de bruit, mais c'est la vie! Quelle différence avec les villages.... suis heureuse de vivre les deux. Ici en ville, il y a même eu un mini feu d'artifice pour le nouvel an, alors qu'avant ils ignoraient nos fêtes.

On s'informe avec Joane, un médecin Australien et amie, obtention de vaccins de tétanos gratuits, car on a déjà eu pas mal d'enfants gravement blessés. (même Chato a marché sur un clou......) Cette année beaucoup d'enfants gravement blessés aux villages. On ne compte plus les aller/retour hôpital. On vient de sauver notre petite sourde et muette d'un village, un jour de plus et ….( grave infection du pied... septicémie...)

Il a fait un peu plus frais ces dernières semaines, il commence à refaire un peu étouffant déjà, surtout aux villages. Les potagers sont en route, il y en a déjà plein. L'eau manque déjà, on trouvera un moyen pour la pomper de quelque part.

On a des dizaines de photos à mettre sur le blog et l'internet n'est toujours pas au top, Chato s'en occupera, car il est rentré en Belgique maintenant. Un tout petit peu de patience..

En ce qui concerne le tuk-tuk, on a déjà des infos et prix. Mais l'organisation est un peu compliquée, où le déposer la nuit, qui va rouler, quand et comment....??? Chaque chose en son temps, déjà on bosse pas mal et on rentre tard le soir. Mieux vaut faire les choses avec un peu plus de réflexion. Vous tiendrai au courant.

2012 starts with good news !

Everything goes wonderful !! (otchaa!) The students from both schools do everything to be on top. We are going to try to obtain a certificate through the Ministry of Education for the students at the end of every course cycle. We are working on it with the "chief of commune", who has already submitted a full file regarding CAMBOBABS (meeting with the Ministry on Tuesday).

Kakada is still as amazing. Not only does he teach well but he helps us with all the projects.

The volunteers are coming from everywhere : France, Israel, Scotland, Canada, Poland, and many Australiens.... they love our projects and have all participated with the full repairs of a house and others have helped out with the English courses, with the games, and with the showers...

We realize now that games at the village are very important, the kids have a hard time focusing and all the physical activity helps them to concentrate. Kakada’s school (CBK) has been made bigger and the kids have more space now, extra benches and additional water wells have been placed.

Met a wonderful American, Anny. She only goes around with he paddle board !! She went through all of Mekong in this way and did many more. Even to go grocery shopping here in Kampot, she travels on the river and the sea with her paddling board; shoes and bag in the front of her board while wearing a little dress. At our first encounter, I asked her to teach paddling to the kids of the rice fields, an hour later everything was arranged... the mini bus that goes to Kep, the boats for Rabbit Island, etc...

So Friday we went. Having seen arriving Anny and Peter, a Canadian friend, on their paddling board in the sea, the kids forgot about their fear of the sea. To greet and say hello to the kids she stands on her head, hahahaha, and does all of this on that paddling board.

At the beach, the kids jumped on the boards. No courses to be taught, they took the paddles, stood up and did so well. (not knowing how to swim.., I was really afraid for them.., but everything went great) There has been no need to use the life jackets because at the school I taught them how to swim (all of this while in sitting position and a little cramped) It was really funny and now they all swim !!!!! They were cool and spent all day in the water. Anny wants to start a paddle boat rental business and donate some money from the business to CAMBOBABS. A t the end of January she comes to show a children’s movie about the environment and will explain things step by step. We will redo Rabbit Island probably with the 2 classes of CBK.

In Kampot, there is a huge difference with the year 2008, the year of my arrival. Big changes, things change fast here; more and more tourists pass by and stay for a while, the guest houses (and there are many of them) are full, mo re and more traffic and noise, but that’s life ! What a difference with the villages... I’m very happy to experience both. Here in town, there has even been a small fireworks for New Year’s eve, while before they ignored our Western holidays.

We inform ourselves, with Joane who is an Australian medical doctor and friend, about obtaining free Tetanus shots because we already have had a few kids seriously injured (even Chato has stepped on a nail...) This year many kids have been seriously injured in the villages. We don’t count the hospital trips anymore. We have saved our little deaf girl from one of the villages, if she were one day later at the hospital then she would probably not have been with us anymore (serious infection at the foot.... sepstisemia...) 

The last weeks the weather has been a little bit cooler, now it starts again to be a little muggy, more so in the villages. The vegetable gardens are back in the game, there are alreay plenty. Almost no water anymore, we will find a way to pump up water from somewhere. We have dozens of pictures to load up on the blog but internet is still not very high tech here. Chato will take care of it because he is back in Belgium now. A little bit of patience.

Regarding the tuk-tuk, we already have info and prices. But the organization is somewhat complicated; where to keep it at night, when and how...??? One thing at a time, we already work very hard and come back late at night. It is better to undertake things with some rational decision making. I will keep you informed.
